Bacteria:
·
Most common type associated with water quality is coliform
Two types fecal and Non Fecal
EPA standard for coliform is a count of zero
Escherichia Coli (E. Coli) is in the fecal bacteria group they occur in the digestive tract of warm blooded animals. Indicates sewage material in water and more harmful disease causing organisms may be present.
How Bacteria Enter Wells:
Bacteria are found in upper soil layers.
Concentrated sources include, inefficient septic systems, farm animals and storm runoff.
Shallow or dug wells that are constructed from boards , bricks, stone or tiles are at risk due to the their heavy reliance on surface water also prone to insect infestation
Drilled wells with casings that are properly sealed from the surface layer can have contaminated water follow the casing down and enter into the well
If well casing does not extend high above grade surface water could enter thru the top of casing during flooding or heavy rains.
Wells can also become contaminated due to improper disinfection practices after the well has been drilled or the pump has been serviced.
