Very common in water supplies, is caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium in water.
Moderately hard water between 3 and 7 gpg may be beneficial due to the fact water becomes acidic at lower hardness levels which can lead to plumbing corrosion and leaching of lead from older plumbing and fixtures.
Hard water causes soaps and detergents not to work as efficiently, it also causes a scale to form in pipes hot water tanks and boilers which can lead to premature failures.
Keep in mind if you are used to bathing and showering in hard water, soft water will leave your skin feeling almost slimy this is due to the fact your naturally occurring body oils are not mixing with hardness minerals
Water Softeners add a negligible amount of sodium to the water unless the water is over 75 gpg.
If your doctor tells you not to drink softened water a bypassed line can be run to the faucet for drinking water, a RO unit can be installed, or you can use potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride in your brine tank.
Treatment Options
We usually do not recommend installation of a water softener unless the water is above 10 gpg.
